PHA LEARNING PRIMER · 01.5

Explain the chemical conditions that support cells

Focus on water's properties, solutions, acid/base relationships, buffering, the four major classes of biological molecules, and ATP. Use Figures 2.15, 2.17, 2.23, 2.26, and 2.28–2.30. Do not memorize molecular drawings, every carbohydrate example, functional-group structures, or metabolic pathways in this module.

Focus for this topic

  • Connect water’s polarity and other properties to transport and regulation.
  • Explain pH, acids, bases, and buffers.
  • Connect carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and ATP to their broad functions.

Recommended study time: 60–90 minutes, including the lecture and reading. Objectives: AP-M01-03 and AP-M01-04.

Your study sequence

Use Next to watch lecture 01.5. Then read the PHA Learning Guide and OpenStax sections 2.4–2.5. Work through the readings in order, using the examples to connect each concept to human function. Planning estimates are flexible; work at your own pace.
