PHA LEARNING PRIMER · 01.4

Connect basic chemistry to body function

Focus on charge, electron transfer or sharing, polarity, and the distinction between reaction rate and energy change. Use Figures 2.3 and 2.8–2.13. You do not need to memorize the periodic table, calculate atomic weights, or balance complex equations.

Focus for this topic

  • Distinguish atoms, isotopes, and ions and explain how electron changes affect charge.
  • Compare ionic, covalent, and hydrogen interactions.
  • Separate a reaction’s energy change from its rate and explain the role of catalysts.

Recommended study time: 45–65 minutes, including the lecture and reading. Objectives: AP-M01-03 and AP-M01-04.

Your study sequence

Use Next to watch lecture 01.4. Then read the PHA Learning Guide and OpenStax sections 2.1–2.3. Work through the readings in order, using the examples to connect each concept to human function. Planning estimates are flexible; work at your own pace.
